Elephants in Africam Safari live in surroundings that safeguard their health and natural behaviors. Our yards, shelters, medical care, nutrition policies, and behavior enrichment programs meet those required by the accreditation standards of AZA.
Recognizing the wonder of these magnificent animals, Africam Safari has six veterinarians who specialize in large mammals. These veterinarians and the animal keepers assigned to the elephants monitor the health and behavior of the elephants and make changes to diet, environment, enrichment activities as necessary. |
Our elephants are free to roam in their yard, have access to water and shade, and can choose to be seen by visitors or retire to sheltered areas.
To provide the elephants with veterinary care and to satisfy their behavioral needs, Africam Safari uses the practice of ¨protected contact¨ for the security of the elephants and the animal keepers. Punitive measures are never used to control the behavior of our elephants.
Continuing education for animal keepers and veterinary staff is a management policy. |
